Mafia: Game For Life (2020) Review, Cast- Zee5

Mafia: Game For Life is a Zee5 original web series streaming from 10th July and stars Namit Das, Anindita Bose, Ishaa Saha, and others.

Mafia: Game For Life

So it looks like Indian web series creators have started to shift from traditional crime dramas to psychological thrillers and stuff. After Breathe: Into The Shadows that was released on the same day, it seems that finally, we will start to see something out of the box.
It is actually a good thing. When there is a variation on a specific OTT platform, they draw audiences from different demographics and interests. People were literally fed up with all those crime dramas which were shoved in their faces.
Don’t be fooled by the name ‘Mafia’ in the title. The series is not based on any druglord or history-sheeter. Mafia here denotes a kind of picnic game played by the characters in the show. The show looks somewhat like those horror flicks like Wrong Turn or Cabin in the woods.
Mafia: Game For Life is directed by Birsa Dasgupta. The cast includes names like Namit Das, Ishaa Saha, Madhurima Roy, and others.
Let us see what this show is all about so that you can decide whether to invest your precious time or not.

Mafia Game for Life

Mafia: Game for Life Plot

A group of friends gather together for a reunion after 6 years. The location is a bungalow owned by a spoilt brat Rishi which is in the middle of a dense forest with no quick access to the outside world.
A few of them are not in good terms with each other due to their trip in the same spot 6 years ago. They decide to play a game called ‘Mafia’ which is somewhat like Witch Hunt. Soon they begin to argue violently over petty issues.
The group is baffled when strange things begin to occur with the arrival of a stranger named Nitin. Further, all hell breaks loose when few of them get murdered. Can the remaining members find the culprit before its too late?

Mafia: Game For Life Review

Indifferent story and average direction

The story looked promising from the promos but turned out pretty much ordinary. It borrows a similar premise from the movies like Darna Mana Hai,Wrong Turn, and also a bit of Cabin in the woods.
The storyline portrays various aspects like carefree youth wasted in alcohol and drugs, insecurity, shallow friendship. etc. It also has subtly displayed prevalent caste discrimination. This subplot adds a little depth to the storyline.
The direction has also been average. Nothing to stand out. A lot of argument scenes that end up in violent scuffle makes you bored. Nothing much to expect here except loudness and pure brashness.

Confusing screenplay

The storyline spans across various timelines. There is a lot of switching between the timeline. However, the sudden and abrupt transition leaves you flustered. The makers tried to bring something out of the blues but the half-hearted effort makes a mess.
There are even times when the backstories of characters are shown without any context. Many characters are brought in as per convenience.

Performances

There is very little scope to comment on anything about the performances in this show. If it weren’t for Namit Das, the entire series would have been an utter mess.
Namit Das is the glue of the show that held everyone together and saved everything from falling apart. Namit Das was impressive in the recently released Aarya. He is extremely fantastic here too.
Apart from Namit Das, only Anindita Bose showed some resilience. Her character was nicely written that also made her look strong.
Except for both of them, everyone was pretty much average to below-average. Loud acting and sloppy dialogue delivery ruined a lot of scenes.

So to say,

  • Mafia: Game For Life is a pretty much average show with nothing exceptional.
  • Namit Das’s performance was the only saving grace for a weakly executed show.
  • If you are looking for something in the thriller genre, then go for it but don’t expect much.

My rating: 🌟 🌟 ½ (2.5/5)
